The North West Learner of the Year at this year’s
learndirect Achievement Awards is Rhoda Chulu, who has
gained qualifications to train to become a nurse after moving to the UK
from Africa in 2004.
The judges named the winners of the regional awards based on their
dedication to their own and others’ learning.
After moving to the UK, Rhoda quickly found work as a health care assistant
in a nursing home. However, she found that, without qualifications, her
progression was limited along with her earning potential.
Rhoda decided to increase her employability with
learndirect courses in adult literacy and adult numeracy.
She was signed up after an initial assessment of her current skills and was
put on the best courses for her needs. Her English courses were
particularly helpful as Bemba is her first language.
Remarkably, Rhoda achieved a Level 2 qualification in both maths and
English and has plans to start studying a nursing degree at Manchester
University this coming September.
When Rhoda heard the news that she was one of the lucky winners of the
learndirect Achievement Awards, she said, "I'd love to
thank my tutors - they made sure I never gave up and they gave me so much
valuable support. I'm starting my nursing degree this year. It's something
I've always wanted to do - I'm so happy!"
